Are you looking for a challenging, fun and safe sport for your daughter to turn herself upside down, rather than your house?
Women's Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) is the perfect sport to teach your daughter co-ordination and confidence, develop creativity and contribute to her general health and fitness. For more details about what the sport entails, look at Gymnastics Australia's information.
Our Gymstar program is a competitive gymnastics program designed for girls. This program builds on the strength, flexibility and coordination of each gymnast and aims for each girl to reach her full potential. The Gymstar program consists of six clearly defined levels which cater for a range of abilities.
Our Gymstar Coordinator is Felicity O'Brien - if you have any specific queries about the program, you can contact her by email or through the office.
Girls in the Gymstar program train between 1.5 and 6 hours per week depending on age and level, and it is not unusual for girls to take more than one year to successfully complete each level.
It is expected that girls in this program will compete in the various external and internal competitions throughout the year. Girls progressing through the Gymstar program may have the option of participating in a Level Award Test. Once girls have competently mastered Gymstar 6 they may have the option of competing in the Victorian State WAG level competitions. Girls in levels 3 - 6 may be invited to attend the annual gymnastics camp to a regional based competition.
Expectations
- Gymnasts and parents are committed to attending all training sessions.
- Coaches expect that the gymnasts come to training with a positive attitude and a willingness to improve.
- Parents ensure that gymnasts are on time to all training sessions.
- Gymnasts are expected to attend at least one external and one internal competition throughout the year.
Selection Process
Gymnasts can be transferred into the Gymstar Program at any age from the Gymfun Program or WAG Squad Program. Coaches are regularly assessing each gymnast’s abilities to ensure all girls have been placed in an appropriate class.
Uniform
Training
- Gymnasts must wear a leotard of their choice, either long or short sleeved.
- Hair must be securely tied back so that it does not need to redone at training.
- All jewellery must be removed before training for safety purposes.
Competition
- Gymnast must wear the club competition leotard appropriate to their level.
- No jewellery or nail polish is to be worn as this can result in score deductions.
- Hair must be tied back neatly and securely and ribbons/scrunchies in matching colours can also be worn.
Training Hours
Gymnasts enrolled in the Gymstar program are required to train all the prescribed sessions. The number of hours trained per week varies according to the level of the gymnast and is set at such a level as to ensure that gymnasts can continue to develop whilst not placing too great a demand on their time.
Holiday Training
Gymnasts are not required to attend training during school holidays; however they may be invited to attend specialised workshops during the school break.
Competitions
Each year, the club will enter each of our Gymstar teams in approximately four competitions. Competitions can be held at various locations around Melbourne and Victoria, so car pooling is often a great way for many gymnasts to participate.
Competitions at Levels 1 are based on participation and fun and all gymnasts received a certificate stating their scores and a medal. At levels 2 and 3 awards are presented for all gymnasts based on their score. Gymnasts work hard to achieve a bronze, silver or gold medal. This award system helps gymnasts to aspire to their own personal best as well as being part of team. Team places for 1st - 3rd are presented. (Teams consist of 3 - 5 gymnasts).
At levels 4 and above, the scoring system becomes more competitive and 1st - 3rd places are awarded for each apparatus, team scores and individual overall.
